Johns Associates Architects has a vast experience in residential and commercial architecture in New Zealand. Chris Johns (NZIA, RIBA) has built up a professional reputation for exceeding clients’ expectations with a quality service that causes many to return.

History of the practice
In the early Seventies Chris worked from his offices at Copperfield in Paraparaumu as part of the Architects Group Practice, along with his father Bernard Johns. This office opened a branch in Wellington, Chris’ home town.

In 1978 Chris joined forces with John Sinclair in Auckland to form Sinclair Johns Consultants, which grew to 90 staff during the boom years of the Eighties. Many prominent buildings around Auckland were designed by the practice during this period.

In 1987 Chris Johns Architect was formed with a smaller workforce and working from offices in Herne Bay.

In 1991 Chris moved the practice into a purpose-built studio on his own property in Milford where he worked on many projects, often with his son Peter and other assistants. Johns Associates Architects was formed.

In 2003 JAA moved to Waiheke Island where Chris has specialised in housing. Working via the internet with Peter Johns in Melbourne, houses have been designed for locations around New Zealand, including Queenstown, Auckland, Mangawhai, Tairua, Hastings, Wellington, and Levin. He has also assisted Peter with many of his projects in Melbourne.

In 2007, the practice won an NZIA Residential Award and Resene Colour Award for a house in Levin.
